Girls' Reformatory/Rainbow Force (女子感化院)
Loretta Yang plays Hsiao Fen, a girl who is sent to a reformatory when she takes the rap for her man. And that's
about as far as the scriptwriter got before going comatose. So for nearly an hour, the performers had nothing to do except pick fights (more like girls'
high school than a reformatory), and try to look tough (a hilarious fail). Finally, at 55 minutes in, a story of Hsiao Fen's internal suffering emerges,
that provides Yang the opportunity to do drama. And there lies the film's only justification for its existence: viewers get to see SuperAvenger not as
hero (or antihero), but as victim, to see Madame Badness face problems she can't punch her way out of, to see Stone Cold Sister weep from life's crushing
sorrow. Yang's acting style is not likely to win awards, but she deserves props for managing to deliver a moving performance despite the flimsy script.
