For those needing a story...

After his release from prison for a killing, The Hero tries to go straight but the old gang keeps giving him trouble. Along the way, he picks up:

  • a Comic Sidekick with puppy dog eyes, who repeatedly bumbles into situations requiring rescue services from The Hero
  • a Love Interest whose self-defense competence repeatedly robs viewers of the genre's highly esteemed gang-rape scene
  • and a Mystery Man who randomly pops up to heroically rescue The Hero

OK - not much of a story here, but there are some upsides to this flick:

  • the steadfast incompetence of The Villains
  • a suitably cheesy soundtrack that often drowns out the dialog
  • 100% kiss-free, with romance replaced by blood-drenched UFC-style pummeling
So just sit back and enjoy.

For those needing a name...

Could not conclusively determine information about this work.

冇錢冇命

In this version, the title appears at 0:43 (briefly, but in glaring yellow on purple background - suitably tacky) as "冇錢冇命", which can be translated as "No Money, No Life" (Cantonese).

I found this title listed only on baidu.com, with screen grabs that confirm that it's this film. It's listed as a 1981 film directed by Lin Ing/林鷹, with alternate titles "男子漢" or "鐵窗誤我二十年".

男子漢

On atmovies.com.tw, "男子漢" was listed as a 1982 film with the same cast and crew (but different name credited for music!). That listing is missing from the new version of the website.

The Taiwan Film Institute website lists "男子漢" as a 1982 film featuring Han Hsiang-Chin/韓湘琴, with the alternate title "不向暴力低頭". But I couldn't find any film listing for this alternate title.

鐵窗誤我二十年

This is the title most often listed: HKMDB, douban.com (also shows screen grabs), and MovieCool all list this as a 1981 film - directed by Chin Ao-Hsin/金鰲勳, not Lin Ing/林鷹!

But this title only adds to the confusion, as it can be loosely translated as "Prison Delayed Me 20 Years", even though the newspaper headline that appears after the title frame declares he was sentenced to 10 years, and film characters repeatedly state that 10 years have elapsed.

So, in summary:

  • The title could be any (or some combination) of 冇錢冇命, 男子漢, 不向暴力低頭, 鐵窗誤我二十年
  • Released in 1981 or 1982
  • Directed by Lin Ing/林鷹 (credited on screen, but film not included in any filmography for him), or Chin Ao-Hsin/金鰲勳 (credited everywhere except on screen)

Clear as mud. But good enough for this piece of pulp flicktion.
