Entry

General Policy
  1. Starting 3 April 2020, entry denied to all travellers who have visited any listed country/region within the last 14 days unless there are special circumstances. As of 8 April 2022, 106 countries/regions were removed from the list, and 56 countries/regions remain on the list. Nationals of Japan and their spouses and children are exempt and allowed entry. Residents of Japan with 'Permanent Resident' or 'Long Term Resident', who have departed Japan with Re-entry Permission by 2 April 2020 are exempt and allowed entry. Travellers with a Special Permanent Residence Permit are exempt and allowed entry. However, they must have a Re-entry Permit from a regional immigration officer.
  2. Starting 1 March 2022, new entry of foreign nationals is allowed, except for the purpose of tourism. Foreign nationals newly entering Japan who meet both criteria below are eligible:
    • Entry for a short-term stay (less than three months) for purposes such as business and employment, or entry for a long-term stay
    • Have companies or organizations located in Japan which employ or invite the entrants for their business or entertainment purposes

Advisable to arrive with: (1)a fixed-date, confirmed return ticket (E-tickets are also accepted) or onward journey ticket, (2) relevant documentation concerning itinerary (i.e. hotel reservations, conference details…), (3) proof of sufficient funds
Transit
- Visa-exempt passports do not require a Transit Visa. For all passports, no transit visa required for transiting through Japan within the same airport without leaving the secured area when holding onward tickets transiting on the same calendar day, or up to 72 hours through Tokyo Haneda (HND) or Osaka Kansai (KIX).

Additional Notes

  1. Travellers holding passports with visa exemptions permitting stays of up to 6 months under the bilateral visa exemption (Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland, United Kingdom) who wish to stay for more than 90 days are required to apply for an extension before the period of permitted stay expires.
  2. For Barbados, Turkey, and Lesotho: exemption limited to ICAO-compliant Machine-Readable Passports (MRP) or ePassports.
  3. For Malaysia: exemption limited to ICAO-compliant ePassports.
