Controls

Click one of the icons in the four corners of the window to display the associated page or menu. Changes selected in the options menu only take effect after the OK button is clicked!

Ways To Search: Examples

For all queries, cASe is ignored (but search result is displayed in proper case). Apostrophes are accepted in pīnyīn queries. Otherwise, punctuation is ignored. Click the search icon to see search results. Alternatively, via the options menu, you can choose to get search results as you type.

  • Default match

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
Blank input All entries All entries

A query that is blank, or only punctuation, returns all entries. Output is only constrained by the search options (see Search Options below).

  • Exact match: prepend "="

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
    =斤 jīn

Only exact matches are to be returned. Can be used with all other search types.

  • Hanzi match

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output

    公斤
    jīn
    gōngjīn
  • Pīnyīn (with tone markers) match

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
pútáo (or "pú táo", or "PúTáo") 葡萄 pútáo

Note: The pinyin for 兒 as erhua r-suffix is "r" (for example, the pinyin for 哪兒 is "nǎr"). Otherwise, the pinyin for 兒 is "ér" (e.g., pinyin for 兒子 is "érzǐ").

  • Numbered pinyin match

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
    pu2tao2 (or "pu2 tao2", or "Pu2Tao2") 葡萄 pútáo

Note: The numbered pinyin for 兒 as erhua r-suffix is r5 (for example, the numbered pinyin for 哪兒 is na3 r5). Otherwise, the numbered pinyin for 兒 is "er2" (e.g., numbered pinyin for 兒子 is "er2 zi3").

  • "中E": toneless pinyin or English match (default)

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
    gun
    棍子

    射擊
    gŭn
    gùnzi
    qiāng
    shèjí

槍/qiāng meaning: gun (weapon). 射擊/shèjí meaning: to fire (a gun). Meanings matching the English are highlighted.

  • "中": toneless pinyin match only (select from options menu)

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
    gun
    棍子
    gŭn
    gùnzi

Useful for limiting results, e.g. a toneless-pinyin-or-English query for "Taiwan" returns 44 matches, but a toneless-pinyin-only query returns just 1 match.

  • "E": English match only (select from options menu)

    Input Hanzi Output Pinyin Output
    gun
    射擊
    qiāng
    shèjí

  • Pronunciation Notes

For a small number of entries (less than 1%), numbered pinyin is also shown, to highlight that a character's tone changes. For example, 早上 uses shang5 instead of shang4.

  • Themes

Level 1 and 2 entries are grouped into areas that roughly correspond with the themes that are typically used to introduce these words in textbooks and phrasebooks: "Job", "Shopping", "Daily life", etc.

  • Alternates

When a query term is found to be listed in the dictionary as an alternate (i.e. not the headword of the entry), then that entry is returned with the headword of the entry highlighted.

For example, if the Hanzi query term is 臺灣, then the entry for 台灣 (Táiwān) will be returned with 台灣 highlighted.

Similarly, if the pinyin query term is "péngyou", then the entry for (朋友) péngyǒu will be returned with péngyǒu highlighted.

  • Meanings

When a word appears at multiple levels with the same POS, there is nothing in the data to determine how the levels are different. When a word has multiple meanings the reader must find the meaning suitable to the POS. Here are some tips (but not all meanings conform to these tips).

POS Indicator
Noun Includes the term "CL:". This term supplies the measure word to be used for that noun.
Verb Begins "to ..."
Measure word Begins "classifier for..."
Preposition Begins with "{Prep}" (but only when a word contains both preposition and non-preposition meanings)
Adverb A word ending in "-ly"
